The European Research Council (ERC), a part of the European Union Research Framework programme Horizon 2020, is open to top scientists from around the world by design. Since its creation in 2007, the ERC has awarded over 9000 research grants to scientists of 78 nationalities leading to more than 100.000 scientific publications, over 1000 patents and over 100 spin off companies driving progress towards a knowledge based society and economy. The example of the ERC has shown that Europe can be successful and become a global reference when it dares to innovate. To date, 32 Japanese scientists have won ERC research grants worth about 41 million Euros.

In order to promote exchanges between Japanese scholars and ERC funded researchers, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) have signed agreements enabling Japanese scholars to conduct short-term study visit of ERC funded research teams.

The conference aims to highlight the opportunities offered by the European Research Council in terms of research collaborations and draw attention of the Japanese scientists to the exchange programmes established between ERC and JSPS/JST. The conference takes place with the support of JSPS and JST that have kindly offered to co-host the event at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, one of the leading research universities in Japan.

We welcome university executives and administrators of Research University Consortium (RUC) Japan, and expect the attendance of early career and established scientists. Young scientists including doctoral students who want to join international collaboration between Japan and EU will benefit a lot from the information provided. Graduate students are also welcome.
